If you’re a DIY kind of guy you’ll notice mechanics rip us off on German cars in the USA. Ex. BMW DIY oil changes cost 3$ more for the oil and filter because they hold slightly more oil. You’ll also notice the absolutely massive difference in quality of the parts down to the cabin and engine air filters. Everything is way better in the German car. BMW warranties their cars from rust for 12 years and 100,000$ miles. Japanese cars can’t do that because they would pay out on every car they sold in a cold climate.

Finally an explanation for why you hear all the hate on German cars which are far better. They last way longer where I live than a Japanese car if you follow the maintenance manual. We use so much road salt in buffalo your Japanese car will crack in half after 15 years vs a German car with solid rust protection which will still be solid. They’re won’t even have visible rust, but your Toyota or Honda will look like shit and not be safe at all.

Not quite true, you'll get a person looking after their Hyundai Gets better than someone looking after their Lambo, it's personality, sports cars gets hit on, that is why the owner buys one. Track days etc, then if the gearbox packs up it's a rubbish car. My BMW IS 34yea4s old and 750 000 kms engine has not been opened, because I look after it and drives it with respect, I can say, not many people has the pleasure of passing me on the freeway. But I must say the new cars are all plastic, which are made to biodegrade, handles go brittle, covers go brittle, cars are just not made to last, my new Merc is a nightmare, it has too much rubbish that can go wrong. But the dealers, and mechanics aren't trained to fix the new cars anymore, they just fit new parts. New BMW, MERCS, VW, AUDI ETC. the engines are smaller and smaller with turbos and superchargers, these engines are highly tuned and under stress ALL the time, so these new cars will start to smoke after 150 000 kms. My Merc, tells me to add 1 lite of oil every 1000kms apparently it's normal. 230 compressor.

Coming from someone who's owned 3 german cars and a Lexus, and has driven them all equally as hard... German cars are no where near as reliable as something like Japanese cars. Oil leaks, electrical problems galore, and overlooked designs leading to common failure points. Don't get me wrong, it's hard to top the fun you get from German cars, Japanese cars are insanely boring in comparison. However, you can do everything right with German cars and they will still slowly destroy themselves once they get over 95k miles. Any BMW/Mini engine for example that starts with the letter N? That N stands for "Nightmare" due to the money pits those engines are. It's easier to list what BMW engines that start with the letter N are reliable, because it's just the N20 and N52, everything else is a money pit.

The most common reason why people think American and German cars are unreliable and Japanese cars are reliable is because unlike German(and basically every other EU mfg) and American manufacturers, Japanese companies like Toyota and Honda *ASSUME* their customers are idiots and aren't going to do the maintenance and as such design them to withstand a certain amount of "abuse" like not changing your oil within the recommended mileage range, or have more forgiving tolerances in the engine so it can still somewhat function even with some excessive ware. It really baffles me how people have no concept of maintaining anything.

There is actual data on car maintenance costs. Repairpal uses data from independent shops, so is basically just recording data on post-warranty vehicles. Even at that point, your entry level BMW's and Audi's only cost $200-$300 more per year on average than comparable Hondas/toyotas. We're talking $400-$500/yr vs $700-$800. Even when you get a performance model with a very powerful engine, that number only ticks up another $200-$300. But the main thing that gets people there is they dont realize how much those engines cost to replace if you need it, and how much of a world of hurt you can be in if you finance one that's used and end up needing a new engine before you've paid off the car. If you want view cars as appliances, or never want to worry about your car being out of commission and want to save a couple hundred bucks a year, buy the Toyota. If needing to take your car in for some love once or twice a year isn't a big deterrent, get what you want. Even when it comes to depreciation, the difference becomes very marginal on an annual basis when you're talking about used vehicles.

I once had a colleague tell me how reliable his Lexus IS was in comparison to my BMW 3 Series, I told him, neither of the 2 BMWs I had at the time, (the other was my Z4M Coupe) had ever had anything worse than a blown light bulb, he insisted his car was better and then, ridiculously asked if I could drop him off at the Lexus dealer where his car was in with a transmission failure 😂.

My friend's Mercedes with 77,000 kms cost $13,000 for camshaft failure. Mercedes Australia were not interested in dome form of concession in the repair.... Benz and BMW are not what they used to be.
